Lemonade Stand by Mr. Feelgood, spotlight skullshines, qwerty uiop, Ian Kizu-Blair, o x x x o, Maggie yes, nick chaset, Orion

July 20th, 2006 6:26 PM / Location: 37.758518,-122.4276

INSTRUCTIONS: Set up a lemonade stand on your corner or at a park and offer patrons free lemonade.

Ask every person that accepts if you can take a picture of them with the cup of lemonade.

We used "Mojita" flavored juice for this task - a $1000 in-kind donation, via Rob, from the Adina juice company. Much juice was distributed in Dolores Park.

The main concept we had in mind was to, using snap shots from multiple adina drinkers (all from the same perspective) create a single sip composed of many people. This sip was also to shift from shortest to tallest and back.
Though I'm not as pleased as i could be with the piece, if you watch the below videos, you'll see that, though choppy, the juice bottle itself moves somewhat smoothly. The longer one only flips throuhg a few shots, but somehow with the contrast between shirts, facial hairs and skin colors it seems to hit that hypnotic sweetspot. The music in these videos was composed by Tapesonten.

This is partly because people are
1) hard to direct (everybody wants to try something unique)
2) really not that interested in doing much for a free bottle of juice
3) often hesitant to be filmed whatsoever

The piece itself kind of turned into something else. Something else which i found kind of interesting and funny as well. Much of the funny elements came about when we decided to take the camera off its tripod and carouse dolores park with free juice to hand out. That video is still on its way, and well worth your return.

Hey, I used to work for those wacky organic Juice fools, glad to see they're still doing crazy things with free juice.

How did you guys connect up with them?

i really love everything you've done but this one...i randomly stumbled upon you guys doing this task and it felt a lot more like some sort of "free corporate giveaway to later gain loyal customers" than a lemonade stand. everyone there was in a good mood, and you were making people happy/confused, which is undoubtedly a good thing, but i really wish there hadn't been a brand (however hippy) attached to this task. it was sort of overwhelming to see the brand repeated in warhol-esque fashion in those stacks of juice, without any acknowledgment of the prevalence of this brand-image in your task.

i liked Orion's idea that you should have been peeling off the brand labels as you gave them to people. think of what we could have done later with all those labels!

i don't like being critical, and i wasn't even at the task for very long, but i felt like i needed to say this.

Foiled again..

yeah i do agree with some of the criticism as far as our frat slash corporate presentation.
people did mistake the thing for a commercial shoot and as a result were leery of being captured on film. furthermore many people acted as though we were doing them a favor by letting them take juice without being photographhed, wh
but seriously
your solution wouldnt have worked.
nobody wants a bottle of unlabeled, piss colored beverage from a bunch of guys whose presentation was
frat like at best

I think the solution would have worked, though, beacause we would have ripped the lables off of the bottle AS we were giving them to people. Not for the mass distribution at the end, of course...payoff wouldn't have been worth it...but I think it could have worked with the folks you were filming.
