Document a Street Dweller by Carolyn H.

August 14th, 2006 8:49 PM

INSTRUCTIONS: Ever look at a person whom is homeless and wonder why they are out on the street? Ever see someone screaming into the wind and wonder what makes them crazy?

Ask them.

Well, I didn't get his photo, but I had previously walked by him on Irving and 24th ave, and he was with a cane and a scarf and a black heavy jacket. He seemed new to the area for me, since I've never seen him around, but he had told me he's around Speedway Meadows and 25th ave and Irving St. a lot. Previously I had gotten a tapioca drink from Quickly's (ew), and I offered him one. I asked his name, and he said Wrong Way, his psuedonym I assume, because he used to always walk along with people, and go to the wrong way. He's from Pasadina, and walked there to here, and he used to have a dog named Sheba, who died along the trip. He said his trip to San Francisco, he had only wanted water..not money, but people only gave him money, but Sheba led him to some clean water, which was a miracle. He's been homeless for about 12 years, and left home when he was 50, cause his mother burned down the house, after finding Sheba for him. He said his mother was a weird lady. He was an alcoholic and drug abuser, and at the time I was talking to him about marijuana, which he was high on, he said it should not be legalized (which I disagreed with). He didn't belittle me nor my friend, who are 15 years old, and he treated us with respect and answered us honestly. He believed love was as real as hate, and that 6 BILLION people is a mind boggling number, and that many of us humans are evil and will end up killing one another. He said the first time he tried drugs was on Haight-Asbury by a church, and he said he loves tapioca drinks. He was very kind, but lost track of his words at times and told me he forgot why he was talking, or what he was talking about. He had a good sense of time, and said he recieves A LOT of human interaction, and has met more people on the streets these last 12 years, than his whole lifetime at home. We didn't have many awkward silences and I promised him, I would stop by and say hello to him next time I see him. His real name is Joel. I miss him. I think I shall talk to more people from now on. There really isn't anything to be afraid of.

I actually know this gentleman, or more accurately, know of him, as the afore mentioned cross streets are close to my abode. I certainly don't know him as well as you do now. Nice job!

What a well-done sensitive job you did! There is so much possibility for this task to be voyeuristic and condesceding. You avoided all the pitfalls and what a great spectrum of topics and thoughts he expressed to you. I am also really glad it was a positive experience for you!

well done

YAY for BOBA

I often go to Taraval for a Quicklys/marijuana combo. Maybe you are my evil twin or would that make me the evil twin.

And its good to see people are engaging homeless like you two did instead of ignoring them.
