Trespassing by Voo

July 3rd, 2008 11:13 AM / Location: 44.949582,-93.28974

INSTRUCTIONS: Go somewhere you are not allowed to go.

This is a resubmission. I unsubmitted my first praxis after Harry Lee called me out for using one proof for two praxes. He's totally right, it was completely lame of me. So I've lost the 5 votes I had prior to unsubmission. In the spirit of true SF0 adventuring, I present to you the following.

You should read my praxis for Trespassing The Future first. If you already have, you know that there is a huge apartment complex undergoing erection right across the street from my apartment complex. You also know that it is the bane of my fucking existence. Construction all day, workers' trucks taking up all the daytime parking, huge vehicles blocking my little street and sometimes blocking my parking garage exit/entrance, dirt and debris everywhere, earsplitting noise. I trespassed into the future by skulking into the bare bones of the complex late last night. Today, I was much more daring.

Emboldened by my night visit to the empty and unguarded building site, and armed only with my phonecam, I decided that my trusty partner in crime and I would today venture into the construction worker's office lot and mini-building-site, at high noon, in bright sunlight, with workers lurking around every corner. I took a quick shot of my partner in crime before we started.
My Partner In Crime, EinOh Yeah?

We snuck into the back area of the half-block lot undetected, and I began snapping photos of anything interesting that caught my eye. First up was a cement mixer tower that stood 20 feet tall, easily.

Cement Tower

Ein was sniffing around by my ankles and he drew my attention to this neat little pile of safety gear: cones and blinky signs not in current use. Good job, partner! Way to earn those Milkbones.

Safety Stuff

I liked the look of this green container vat thing, so I was snapping a picture...when a construction worker shouted at me from across the lot. "Hey, you can't be in here!" This is why the picture is a little warped. I must have jumped a foot.

Warped Green Thing

I waited about 5 minutes, lurking around the edges of the back entrance I had first come in, and then re-entered the lot. (I told you I was emboldened! Harry Lee had called me out! HARRY LEE. I had to get better proof so I could resubmit!) The guy who'd yelled at me was up in a huge machine, so I skulked down low, crouching and shuffling with mutt in tow, hiding behind stacks of lumber. Finally, I stood up and quickly got this shot of an unused SkyJack and a pile of lumber.
SkyJack and Boards

The guy in his big yellow machine started turning my way, so I ducked down again quickly and crouch-walked over to another spot. I got a picture of my hiding place: behind these barrels and piles of crap. You can see the big yellow machine in the distance.
Hiding Place

Finally, he climbed out of the machine and went across the street to the erection site, so I decided that Fortune favors the bold, and I ran out to the middle of the lot (where anyone could see me) and got a close up picture of his yellow machine. It's apparently called a Zoom Boom. This pleases me greatly.
Zoom Boom Machine

I am much more satisfied now. Last night, I thought that it was totally acceptable to double-submit the exact same proof for two different tasks if the shoe fit. I now understand that when tasks collaborate, it's because they are done in similar places, or at the same time. So I'm really happy now that I've regained my sense of SF0 pride in myself by unsubmitting and resubmitting this daytime daring adventure. Here's hoping this gets me more votes on both this praxis and my Trespassing the Future praxis. *raises a glass*

PS: Ein seemed to enjoy SF0-ing. I'll try to include him in future tasks. He sure is an asshole when you try to take his picture, though.

"Go to a place you will not be able to go to in 10 years; for instance, a place
under development that will never be the same again."

I won't be able to go inside the infrastructure of this building in 10 years. Hell, I probably won't be able to go inside the building itself without lying my way in, pretending I want to rent an apartment or something.

You make a good point. I'm not expecting any double votes, quite honestly. I was just trying to knock a couple out of the park simultaneously, especially since they were two tasks from two grouposes for which I didn't have any tasks completed. But thanks for voting at all! :)

A vote for recompletion.

Also, I'm a sucker for big mixy things...

Oooh, and fork lifts! Or at least, signs about fork lifts. I'm pretty sure The Zoom Boom is a forklift, upon further inspection of my photo.

Multitasking is a *good* thing!

Yes, but getting credit for two tasks and only writing one praxis seems like cheating. It felt off when I did it, but I thought that's what it meant to combine tasks. I see now that there's a more creative way to do it.

True.

This version is quite nice.

There are several different kinds of multitasking:

Implicit multitasking: "I built a structure thirty feet high, and then I climbed it, and then I talked a cop into photographing me on top of it, but I'm only submitting it in this one place." This is always a winner.

Weak multitasking: "We walked 25 miles, during the 24 hours that we were holding hands, oh and also we were wearing clothing made from carrots; here are three submissions." This is usually a winner.

Strong multitasking: "I made a musical instrument out of celery, and the celery was being used for something other than its intended use, and I made it work; here are three submissions." In an era where votes dominate score, this is rarely a winner. (Which isn't to say you shouldn't do it - playing for number of proofs is no less legit than playing for score or votes or shiny beads or sexual favors.)

I congratulate you on an excellent recovery, and on which is quite vote-worthy.

I meant 'em the way I said 'em, though of course you're welcome to argue that I'm wrong. (Think "strong AI" or "the weak anthropic principle.")

In the strong case, the tasks are intimately coupled. The multi-task overwhelms the individual tasks.

In the weak case, the tasks merely share a time, space, and participant list, but don't otherwise have much to do with each other. The multi-task is incidental.

Thank you. It means a lot to me to be accepted in this community and I want to do right by it.
