Going to School by Yoshi

April 4th, 2006 8:40 PM

INSTRUCTIONS: Attend a class at a school in which you are not enrolled. Study hard, take good notes and make an SF0 report on what you learned.

I attended a seminar with my girlfriend at University of Michigan on language and technology. This particular session concerned Norbert Wiener's book on cybernetics and society, and Vannevar Bush's idea for the memex (which prefigures hypertext in some interesting ways). We talked about noise versus information and what relevance semantics and "meaning" has in communications theory (if any). I spoke up on Derrida's Archive Fever and Kittler's ideas on sound reproduction and sampling rates, remediation, Benjamin on flaneurie, etc. I also learned about a Filipino modernist poet: Anwar Chairil.

ARCHIVE FEVER

I've got archive fever! The only cure is a hot tape drive co-lo backup! Rrrrrrrrr... actually the only cure is holding hands with Derrida, the opportunity for which has already passed (on).
