Work is So Strange by Yuni Ckornwhole

July 11th, 2006 12:54 PM

INSTRUCTIONS: Describe in some detail the strangest thing that happened to you at work in the past week. If you don't work, describe the strangest thing that happened to you during a leisure activity.

I'm a teacher and off for the summer, but I had to go in yesterday to do lesson planning. I had my classroom door open while working and a bird flew in. (Cool, I'm Snow White) I went about my business, looking up once in a while to watch it do impressive circles in the high ceiling, then come to perch on the California mission models. (i never have my camera, for these moments) Ten minutes, more circles, more perching, but they were getting faster and more frantic, as was I. Finally, the bird descended and flew over to the windows. It hopped around and knocked over pencils and pads, but there was still an air of composure and forethought in its attempts to fly through the window. It was at a level where I could grab it, so I walked over, but couldn’t bring myself to touch it (I never had pets, thoughts of plague, that’s a mean looking beak, insert another excuse here). I went to the teach’s lounge to get a towel (really is all you need), and returned with the guy painting the classrooms (and his towel). At this point the bird was perched up high, so painter threw his towel at it (because that’s going make it want to fly down to you????) I kept my mouth shut and towel throwing and increased bird frenzy ensued. 10 painful minutes later it came to a head, when bird, completely out of it’s mind in panic, chooses flight (like strongly) and flies right into the window above Mission Nuestra Señora de la Soledad (The 13th mission: historically and visually the most disastrous of all the missions). Neck broken, painter watching the tears well in my eyes, and thoughts of… (I should have f-ing grabbed it when I had the chance, why wasn’t I carrying my own towel, Why did I let painter work the bird into sheer panic with his towelwork). Bah, sad-strange. Still mourning...

Was it a European swallow? Or an african swallow?
