INSTRUCTIONS: INTENTIONALLY bore yourself for at least 6 hours.

What makes you bored? Describe how you know that you're bored.

Start: Friday, 4:00 PM
This task is in process. Don't bother voting on it yet, I am still busy boring myself.

Writing all sorts of pointless drivel can be quite boring. I wish I had signed up for this task last time I had to fly from SFO to Boston and back. That was 6 hours of mind-numbing boredom. But now I am just sitting here on my couch typing and listening to my wife talk to my mother-in-law. In Czech. A language I do not know except for a few key phrases like "Where is the bathroom," "Can you tell me where the subway station is," and "Are you a Czech woman?" Really useful stuff.

...are you bored yet?

(in progress)

Update: 6:40 PM. Still bored. Getting hungry. Am still listening to my wife talk to her mom. And the busses going up and down Union Street. The little voice that tells you which stop you have arrived at sounds much louder when you're bored.

I considered videotaping me sitting here on the couch for six hours, ripping that to a digital media, and uploading that here, but that would probably blow up the servers.

Another indicator of me being bored is my paragraphs get shorter.

This also happens when I am depressed.

Update: 8:22. I am so bored that I am trying to stitch together the little blips of dialogue and copy you get from flipping through the channels at five-second intervals into a story.

"...and today in Baghdad..."

"...it makes your skin silky soft..."

"...but who was the father?"

"...the Miami heat at the half..."

(still going)

Final Update: 11:07 PM The final straw was when my wife and I opened the Netflix envelope that came today to discover yet another Bollywood spectacular. She has a love and passion for the genre that I just can't muster up. After two hours of shoulder-dancing and high-pitched singing in Hindi, I decided that this has truly been one of the most boring seven hours of my life. I draw the line when I catch myself watching the sports caster prattling on about the San Jose Sharks. Down that path lies madness. With relief, I switch off the television and relax with a copy of the Utne Reader.

Case Closed.
