Potted Plant Distribution by Otto Bertram, Leonid Brezjnev

January 13th, 2007 8:20 AM

INSTRUCTIONS: Acquire a small potted plant. Leave the plant in a store, cafe, or a location of your choosing that has lack of potted plants.

Ok, we had been planning to do this task for a quite while, but never really got round to actually doing it, even though we already had already made some detailed plans:

At first we were planning to place a normal house-plant in our school hall, but we that turned out to be too expensive (we deidn't really want to spend a lot of money on this task. It wasn't until the chrismas season started when we had a much better idea. Since our school had no chrismas trees or decoration whatsoever, we decided to bring our very own potted tree to school (I know it's not a plant but hey, who ever heard of christmas plants?). We had the idea on the tuesday before the holidays, we were still at school so we went straight to the janitors and teamleaders (We didn't really feel like showing up with a tree and being sent back because of a possible fire hazard or something). They weren't really all that exciting because they weren't sure wether it's was legal or not, but we got our permission and so we went shopping. We went to the local shopping mall by bike to purchase a tree (yeah, not a good idea). We got one for roughly 10$ and bought some decoration as well. Then came the hard part, we had to take the tree home on our bikes. We decided to balance it on the back of one of our bikes and just walk it home.

We asked a stranger to take a picture of us both and the tree but it turned out to be blurry. As soon as we got home, the main question became how we were going to get it all the way to school. We decided to take the top off of our old surf cart so we could place the tree in it (it has a box for the sails and stuff) and drive it to school by bike.

Not only did this finally give some use to the cart which we weren't using anymore, it also allowed us to decorate the tree before we went to school the next morning and drive through our town with a decorated tree, which is good fun. When the cart was ready, we started decorating the trees. We bought some balls earlier at the mall and we found a peak, lights and some other stuff in our old christmas stuff and so the fun could start. We started with the peak and some other stuff:

Then came the balls and lights...

Now that the tree was ready, all we had to do was load it in the cart and wait until next morning to get it to school. We woke up earlier so we'd be done before the first break started, meaning the hall would fill with people and it would be hard to get the tree up where we wanted it.
We left for school wednesday morning still in the dark and it took about half an hour to get there.

We didn't bring the camera so we don't really have any photos of this part, thus we don't have any proof to the tree actually being on the statue. We used 2 ladders to lift it all the way up (it's damn heavy). On friday morning, we moved it to where the school was giving away free hot chocolate, and in the afternoon we took out all the decorations (we even found a sandwich in it, someone must have thrown it in from the ground when it was up the statue.) We took some pictures with a cell phone.

We took the decorations back home and threw the tree in the trash. Yeah i know, took us a bit long to write this, but we've been busy and it was our holidays. I know we didn't really 'leave' our potted tree and it's not really a plant, but we did provide a vegetation-lacking environment which was also lacking christmas decoration a nice tree. I say, mission complete!

I love that you found a sandwich in your tree. I prefer to think that instead of someone lobbing it in there, the tree is simply frugal and brought its lunch. Also, strictly technically speaking your tree is a plant. Unless it's plastic. Or an alien in disguise. It looks like an evergreen, though. Nicely documented, guys.
