Journey to the End of the Year: Berlin 2009 by Adrian Lang

January 1st, 2010 10:03 AM

INSTRUCTIONS: MEET at Alexanderplatz at 19:00 on 31.DEZEMBER.2009

Try to reach a series of checkpoints as STEALTHILY as possible while avoiding being caught by chasers. Should you be captured, you become a chaser yourself, now PURSUING your former friends and allies.

The city spreads out before you. Rushing from point to point, lit by the slow strobe of fluorescent buses and dark streets. Stumbling into situations for a stranger's signature. Fleeing unknown pursuers, breathing hard, admiring the landscape and the multitude of worlds hidden in it.

For one night, drop your relations, your work and leisure activities, and all your usual motives for movement and action, and let yourself be drawn by the attractions of the chase and the encounters you find there. No bikes, no cars, just feet and public transportation.

Describe your experience.

Diving from one virtual space to the other, I were recruited for the action at the 26c3. Berlin on Silvester being a parallel world of its own, stripped from any remaining resemblance to a common residing place. I were chased, befriended chasers, cheated chasers. I ran, befriended runners, had fun with runners.

Been a technician, then running for a meaning. The dead unicorns gave me strength, a goal, a destiny. The war did go on, and I ran. Chasers, runners, robots. Robots, runners, chasers. I reached the space station c-base as third of few, too few. Chasers and robots everywhere. Yet the new year began. We’ll see what comes now.
