Osama CAN Come Break Into Your WiFi by the white bread cancer, Endive Breakfast

August 17th, 2006 2:30 PM

INSTRUCTIONS: The title of this task was originally the punchline of a joke I overheard in a bar in a small Colorado town--one of those strange condensations of unrelated fears that you get during full tides of national anxiety (witness 'piracy funds terrorism', Snakes on a Plane). Of course, Osama can come break into your wireless. And so can the FBI, in three minutes flat. But can you? Be your own Osama, crack your password.

More generally, breaking WEP/WPA encryption on home 802.11 networks is a crucial life skill for the EquivalenZ mobile gamer. Why rely on unsecured connections when you can squat on anyone's signal at will?

And remember, network insecurity starts at home, so practice packet sniffing there. Steal your own identity while you're at it.

Hah, done. This was fun and basically all that I learned in my first two weeks of work, other how /not/ to organize a non-profit. NKUK provided moral support and commiseration over google talk during my first stretch of boredom at work. I still haven't changed my key. I feel like this is half parlour trick, half practical--sort of like picking locks or some sleight of hand.. everyone should have something like it.

Used a Backtrack live linux cd on my Asus w/ Intelpro2200BG and a good external Netgear card (that has since been stolen, making this whole thing much harder). At first I had to cheat and start large downloads on my target computer to scare up enough valuable packets, but then I figured out how to deauth attack and rebroadcast ARPs, so this could work in the field now. The actual crack was totally frustrating since I remembered/assumed that I had set an 128k key; after 3 hours I second guessed myself, set it for 64, and got my key out in 2 seconds. Maybe 64-bit is actually better.
