Tom Lehrer to Tommy Lee:
Tom Lehrer -> Moxy Früvous -> Ben Folds -> World Party -> XTC -> The Police -> Stewart Copeland -> John Bonham -> Eric Carr (of KISS) -> Tommy Lee
Starting from both ends of the search, I realized that Tommy Lee's similar artists were all other drummers, and most of them had no other peers, which narrowed the field. Jumping from larger name to larger name, I finally broke into the solo career of Mr. Copeland's, which really opened up the board. After all, who ISN'T like The Police, or wasn't at least, in 1985.
Because Tom Lehrer is a solitaire diamond, on his end, only Moxy Früvous was likely to head back into 1985 territory.
Strange to say, the keystone of this arch, World Party, is a band I have never heard of.

saves no steps.

rats. only I now see that the database doesn't work that way -- just because artist 1 is "similar" to artist 2 doesn't mean artist 2 is "similar" to artist 1. So this list still works (I think) from Tommy Lee to Tom Lehrer but not the reverse.
To go from Tom Lehrer to Tommy Lee in the right order:
