Perform A _____ Deed by ambitron indifornian
July 5th, 2006 12:07 AM
this evening i celebrated the birth of our nation down at the wharf with two good friends. i ended up driving to this event as well as buying them dinner at in n out. i guess that could be counted as a good deed, but thats just too easy.
as walking home from my car parked many blocks away, i stopped at the corner store to pick up a pack of camels before continuing home. i know, bad...right? cigarettes.
i crossed the street and about 100 feet from my stoop, this lady stopped me, seeing that i was smoking and asked me for a cigarette. already feeling guilty that i was smoking i gave her one. then, she asked me for one for her friend and of course i obliged. she was so so so happy that she gave me a hug, telling me that if i was ever in new orleans to give her a call.
i was so bewildered by doing something so simple. i know that it was just some crazy lady at the bus stop, but its not often that strangers feel the need to hug another stranger on the street at almost midnight.
it was heartwarming and i feel glad to have brightened her day by such a simple good deed.
ADDITION:
today after going to target in colma and stocking up on pillowcases just coz i liked the design of the label, i drove around fiending for coffee. there was no starbucks to be found (!!!) but, there was a barnes and noble with a cafe. so, i parked the car and went in for my drug.
there was only one girl behind the counter and a very long line...great, i thought. ill have to wait. the girl was visibly pissed. she was slamming the cups down on the counter, frowning and being really curt with the customers. but, as i was standing there, my years of working in a cafe, being the only one there with a very long line came back to me. that job sucks!
so, it was my turn. i ordered my stuff and then asked where i could leave at tip. she explained to me that they didnt have a tip jar, but people could leave tips if they wanted to. she then turned and started getting my drink. i then retrieved $5 from my pocket and placed in on the counter. she came back and i said that since she was the only one there, she deserves the money and that she should put it in her pocket. she smiled and said thanks.
i hung around the cafe for about another half hour, looking at magazines and planning for "package from the insane". observing her, i noticed that she was noticably more chipper and happy with customers after that. it made me happy. i know money shouldnt matter, but it really does when you work a lame job like that...and i had for many years.
cheers to you coffee girl. i hope you get more tips.

That is just so wrong in so many ways. Hmmmm it's given me an idea for a new task...
On behalf of cranky customer service reps everywhere, I applaud your deed wholeheartedly. Perhaps it was not the money itself that changed her demeanor, but the appreciation that your tip represented.
No, no. Don't worry ma'am. You're not in trouble. The reason we stopped by today, you see, is because we believe you're underestimating yourself, and we thought maybe an authority figure could inspire you to reach to greater heights. We noticed you'd reached the first page of players, and were surprised that a prolific fifth level player has completed very few higher level tasks. We're not here to scold you or tell you what to do. We're just suggesting that you've got more choices now, and that perhaps you might consider undertaking a task which would be a greater challenge. Now, as we said, you're not in trouble, but out of 31 tasks completed, only 4 were level three. We think you're limiting yourself. Now, it's not up to us what you do, and we don't want to upset you. We were just hoping to inspire you a little.
