Thank You The MGMT by Jane Doe

October 18th, 2007 1:35 PM

INSTRUCTIONS: Make an official looking but contradictory sign.
Sign it "Thank you The MGMT"

Example: No waiting in lobby.
Thank you the MGMT

Hang it in a public place and document it with a photograph.
Go back later and see if it still there.

People put up so many ridiculous signs. I've daydreamed about using my camera phone to collect ridiculous signs urging rest room neatness. (Maybe that should be a task!) I saw this task while I was browsing around trying to decide which team to join, and got really excited. (The capitalization and abbreviation of "MGMT" in the assignment is just that right touch--I imagine it in court houses and truck stops everywhere.) After I put up my sign and photographed it I later realized I wasn't qualified to do this task yet. Rats! So being able to put this up now is gratifying.

I thought a bit about an in-joke/obnoxious sort of sign. Our other (new and fancy) building just had all the elevators shut down for changing the ropes due to "serious safety concerns." So my first draft note said "Please do NOT remind Klaus building residents that we have a Starbucks and working elevators. Thank You The MGMT." But I thought that was sorta mean and too much of an in joke. And it violates the dada-ist spirit of this task, which is to do something nonsensical and puzzling. But at this point my mind was trained on the elevator theme, so I came up with:

Please do NOT
push the elevator button
with your left hand.

Thank You The MGMT

I was thinking a bit about middle eastern customs about tasks it's polite to do with your right and left hand. But it's mostly just random and nonsensical.

A day later, my sign is still there. I wish I could tap into the video surveillance camera to see people's reactions!

The fact that most people are right-handed definitely works in your favor on this one. To the casual observer, they'll appear to be dutifully obeying the commands of The MGMT.

Ooh, I´d push it with my left hand just to annoy the management!
I need to start thinking like this in order to do some decent tasking at corporate buildings...

Nice!

I love it when my tasks inspire people!

Beautifully unsettling. Nicely done.

And, congratulations on avoiding the temptation to make a coherent in-joke. The final draft is much more interesting.

It's cool that it was still there after a day.
