Note To Players by Britt ++
September 17th, 2006 2:21 AMThe Drive to play SF0 will fade. Compulsive gamblers require bigger and bigger stakes to get that rush they felt the first time they placed a bet. Its much the same with SF0. Playing takes you out of your ordinary headspace. You do crazy and creative things that you never would have thought of before. This is why I play. I'm a pretty shy button-down sort of person, but my sf0 character has broken into an abandoned lighthouse, been a zombie and attacked tourists in Union square, masqueraded as Agent D-Wayne, and turned part of Golden Gate Park into a desert.
Maybe your motivations are different. But if they're not, know this, you're going to need bigger and bigger hits. You're going to have to go farther and farther to get the same feeling. The tasks you do to get your fix of inspiration will take more and more work and more and more time to plan, apathy will set in and your drive to play will fade. Understand this, be prepared for it, keep doing the little things, push through.
(I say all this riding the high of the bus-stop conversion...which was exciting both for the reactioin that it provoked and the fact that the cops slow-rolled by 3 times during the construction.)

I have this to add: Don't give up on sf0, and it won't give up on you.
Every thing Brit said is completely true. it takes a lot of energy, physical, mental, and physical, to play this game. eventually you'll just get tierd. however, though the eventual apathy is unavoidable, it is not insurmountable. even if you aren't playing yourself so much, keep on checking the site. seeing the crazy and ingenious things other people are doing is at least 90% of the satisfaction of the game (at least for me). Eventually, some little thing will inspire you, and all of a sudden, the magic will be back. this monkey had all but retired, and recently fell back off the wagon.
Perhaps the timeline is something like, a) initial obsessive fervor; b) period of apathetic introspection; c) return to oz with changed perspectives.
or maybe thats just me...
"Push through!"
"Though the eventual apath is unavoidable, it is not insurmountable."
I hold out hope that some retired players will read this...and return. : )
i think these notes to players, which have been pretty uniformly awesome, should be sent as actual notes to all the players. (maybe with a link to the task, if they want to read any discussion that ensued.) what do you think? admin? or maybe part of the task is to spam all of sf0 with your note..
Also, that particular "push through" sentence was supposed to be a James Frey joke, but I think his mantra is "hold on" or something...
Sad. Is it like the initial year of being in love? You can learn to make a comfy routine together after that, but you'll never get back the nearly debilitating crack high of obsessive hormones...
I hope we can prove you wrong or follow your advice.
Geez, ain't that the truth...
