Restore Land to its Not-Past by Britt ++, Cameron, Joshua Kelly, Orion, Jason

July 2nd, 2006 8:03 PM

INSTRUCTIONS: Plans are being made for the (re-?) re - development of the man-made land-mass (and former military installation) known as Treasure Island. One aspect of such plans is the creation of wetlands on one corner of the island. This is the restoration of this artificial island to its not-past. Is such an action freed from flaccid nostalgia, and/or unburdened by the consequences of naturalist good intentions? Whatever the meaning of these wetlands (once simply "wet"), one project is too small a sample to decide, so we challenge you:

Choose a piece of land to Restore to its Not-Past.

Diversity is the unifying factor in all natural systems. There is no place or community that can not benefit from the addition of fantastic newness. If the new factor, evolutionary jump or change is not beneficial, then it will be simply weeded out by time and it's surroundings.

With that principle in mind, we set out in the creation of the heretofore non-existant Greater Golden Gate Desert.

A suitable piece of land was chosen, one whose soil had been posioned by the non-native eucalyptus tree leaves. While the effect of the eucalyptus trees can be seen as negative, that's a short-termed view: it the end, it brought about the beginnings of the Desert.

Sand was transported by bucket from the nearby beach, and the area was prepared with a special water absorbing barrier. Or it might have been a bedsheet, we just don't know... important science-type notes and observations were lost when the newly filled desert experienced it's first sand storm.

Previously, several desert plants were chosen by the team for their terraforming abilities. These plants were placed with the utmost of care in there new enviorments, and a barricade was erected. A sign was hung to declare the existance and the official nature of the project.

Finally, we gazed proudly upon the seed of the new biome we had helped usher into the world.

As we prepared to leave, Orion Kellog was tragically lost in the shifting sands, and died of dehydration. He will be missed.

I would've enjoyed a little fauna... a giant man-eating scorpion, perhaps?

We fretted for some time over the purchase of a plaster bull's skull, sold next to the cactae, but it was beyond our means.

As it happens, Nature provided the beasts for us: while we stared at our creation, we noticed a plethora of wee bugs exploring their new enviorns.

When I check on the site next week, I fully expect to see a tortoise or a coyote resting peacefully.

This is strange, when I view this task from withing my character's profile, I get a truncated page without the comments and pictures. Also I can't upload files. Check it out.

Is there some venu where I can voice my whiney complaint?

I think y'all had a unclosed tag or two in your task blurb - does it work now?
