Contents of a Character's Wallet by Celina

June 10th, 2006 5:31 PM

INSTRUCTIONS: In Jack Finney's short story, "Contents of a Dead Man's Pocket", the character - clinging to the side of a building - imagines what the world will think of him if they only have the contents of his pockets to consider.

Empty your pockets, your wallet, your purse out onto a table- tally the contents and tell us what the world would think of you, if they had only those effects to consider. Then, decide upon one thing to add to the contents of your pockets, your wallet, or your purse, which will better enunciate the truth of your person to the world.

I gave carrying a wallet another go this fall and gave up mid-winter.

The items I carry every day in my pockets:
  • Cellphone
  • Wells Fargo check card
  • Driver's license
  • Car and apartment keys
  • Cash and coins- amount varies
  • Various receipts
  • camera (Not shown)

The contents of my wallet I don't carry with me anymore but sits on my coffee table:
  • 1 post-it note with the names of a co-worker's characters on a computer game
  • Tip calculator card
  • Health insurance card
  • Cousin's business card
  • Walgreen's gift card
  • 2006 pocket calendar
  • Minneapolis mini map (no use, I'm still always lost)
  • Expired license
  • Noodles punch card
  • Old iPod lanyard card
  • Chili's To-Go menu
  • Steps of Service card
  • Co-worker's business card
  • Sanctuary salon/spa card
  • Salon Montage card
  • Sbarro punch card
  • Two keys for work duties

Someone looking through the contents of my pockets may assume I try to carry as little with me as possible, be collecting quarters for laundry, spend too much on lunch and battling a chest infection. Someone looking through the contents of my wallet may consider me as someone who needs to clean her wallet more often and holds onto old bits of information too long.

Something I would add to better describe myself would either be my iPod nano (that lives in my car) or a Moleskine journal, which may or may not ever be used. This would be a place to put random ticket stubs or fliers and if I had the guts to commit to paper, thoughts and drawings.

I do love this wallet

I would consider carrying a wallet again if it could be just like the one I have, but smaller. I really do love this wallet, It's just a little too tall to not stick out of my back pocket and a little too thick. If I had the sewing tools and know-how I'd attempt to remake it myself.
