RAoK/SAoB: the Random Acts of Kindness and Senseless Acts of Beauty Task 1 by Celina, Aaron

June 21st, 2006 8:43 PM / Location: 44.976031,-93.27306

INSTRUCTIONS: Purchase a dozen roses (or daisies, or other flower of your choice). Distribute to strangers in a public place, who look deserving or in need of a flower. Offer no explanation.

Don't forget to document.

We had never met before even though we collaborated on The Things We Bury For Our Friends. After some email exchanges we decided to join forces and distribute flowers on Nicollet Mall.

Aaro: I picked Celina up at Anodyne where she was conversing with Oliver X. It was the first time I met him as well. I gave him an SF0 pin per Ian's request. I also gave Celina a pin. Nice to meet you, Oliver, but you were probably just as paranoid as Piratey Monkey was when meeting me. The difference was that Piratey Monkey had been drinking.

Celina and I drove to Nicollet Mall and sat down near a bus stop and chatted for a while before figuring out exactly how we were going to go about this task. We had the flowers in hand and we decided to split them up... She got all the purple ones and I got all the yellow ones. We started off well right away but Celina ended up getting turned down the first two times. :-( She came back very well and we were able to distribute all of our flowers minus the last one I let her keep. A highlight was the strange man that accepted my flowers right away but ended up wandering around slowly and pausing to then turn around to come back at us! We rushed down a different street to avoid him. We also enjoyed the cute couple with the meow cat they had around their neck. After we took their picture they wrote down their email address on the back of my BART pass that I still had in my wallet from SF so they could get a copy of the photos. I sent them the urls on my Flickr page to abide by this task's rules. We also saw an owl and I wanted to kill it.

We walked down to Ike's afterwards and had an appetizer and a bottle of wine. A great evening.

Celina: (will write more here later)
This task was difficult for me because
1. I was meeting someone for the first time and spending several hours with them and
2.I can be pretty shy and being shy for this task would not do us any good.

Oy, I should note the HTML threw up and part of the text is somewhat lost. Also everything after the text is in bold-o-vision. I must say that it's never an unawesome moment when someone goes through and completes this task.

I understand now, why this task is better done in pairs. Getting people to accept the flowers is only half the problem. Getting people to let you take their picture is also hard.

Fixed. I shouldn't be submitting proof after drinking.

Two of these, the 3M air vent one and the yellow-shirted lady with headphones one, just look kinda surreal. Is it the lighting, or just the comparatively clean, new, stone landscapes of Minn?

I assure you, it was just the lighting. That, and I just may make everything around me sparkle and glisten.

Those air vents with the 3M and Target logos on them are part of Orchestra Hall. The light is coming from over my right shoulder and was passing through the trees of Peavey Plaza. The one with the woman with headphones was taken on a 8th St S about a half block west from Nicollet Mall looking towards La Salle - and the sun was reflecting strangely from the IDS Tower behind us. Open the high resolution one and note the shadows going in multiple directions. (See the Google Map Location and zoom in... also see the pretentious site about the IDS Tower.) Lastly, Celina made everything sparkle and glisten.

Oh...
