Buy A Stranger A Drink by Danger D. HotBod
June 19th, 2006 9:45 AM
I was standing outside a bar smoking a cigarette and this guy came up to me and started talking to me, telling me he was from Seattle and that his car broke down and that he needed money and bla bla bla. I was getting annoyed because I was feeling like a mark and was about ready to extract myself from the situation when he said "Why don't you buy me a drink?"
'Points!!!' I thought - I figured it was pretty convenient that I didn't have to be uncomfortable buying a stranger a drink and worrying about them thinking I was hitting on them since it was his idea. I decided to give into the synchronicity.
So I said "Okay sure I'll buy you a drink" and got him a long island at his request.
Then he asked me for money in different ways and I said no in different ways. The weirdest was the last thing he said was "Give me the money in your pocket" and I said "No I am not going to do that". We made eye contact and I wondered if we were going to fight or something. He didn't say anything and walked away. His name was Jack.
I think there's a moral to this story but I'm not sure what it is.

I hate the car broke down thing. I don't want to reinforce scamming behavior by giving money to the folks who try this sort of thing on me, but at the same time I don't want to call them on it. It is, after all, partly a shield for their pride.
If you're going to give folks money (I often do), about the best thing I've found is to interrupt them before they get too far into their story, and offer them whatever it is you're willing to give them.
