The Callouses on Your Hands by Dennis Carwyr

August 11th, 2010 6:42 AM

INSTRUCTIONS: Think of a physical mark on yourself that has a story behind it. Tell the story.

OR

Think of a physical mark on yourself, and invent a story story behind it. Tell the story.

Please, don't tell us which of these options you select.

I'll give you two marks. One story is true, one is false. Or are they?

My ear

Notice the fold at the top? When I was about 2-3 or so, I was petting a stray cat. The cat was okay for a bit, but then turned around and swiped me on the ear. The scratch became infected and had to be cut open to be drained. When the skin healed, it healed shut, leaving that fold.

My thumb

That bump near the base of the nail is from when I shut my grandfather's truck door on my thumb. I was about 4-5 years old and we had just got back from fishing. I tried closing the door, but held it wrong.
