Irregular Animal Documentation by Cameron, Joshua Kelly

June 4th, 2006 3:40 PM

INSTRUCTIONS: Document an animal you rarely see. Domesticated animals - whether friend, foe, or feral - don't count except in extraordinary circumstances. Beyond that, you're on your honour; in some areas, a squirrel might well be a rare sighting, just as in other areas it's quite common to see munk parakeets (i.e. the pet store kind) perched on telephone wires along Woodlawn Street...

On a recent hike up on the Beach by Jenner, Joshua and I recently came across a large group of Sea Lions (Zalophus californianus), sunning them selves on the oddly pitted rocks around us. I spent a good 20 minutes approaching them as slowly as possible, freezing every time they looked up at me. I was able to get withing about 30 feet before they panicked and took of into the sea; first the young ones, then the old pitted bulls, grumbling as the went. But in the time between, I got to spend some real quiet, quality time; watching them lying with out a care on the rocks.

Unfortunately, only one of the pictures turned out well.

I will suplement this failure of extensive documentation with a fun fact: Sea Lions are the only mammal whose milk contains no Lactose. Sea Lions can be distinguished from local seals by their longer, pointier noses and fins, and small ears; local seals will have almost no visible ears.

Milk

Ah. Finally, an animal whose milk even the lactose-intolerant can enjoy. I shall domesticate this beast, harvesting its sweet nectar and producing the first real whipped cream for the lactose-intolerant.

Eh, I wouldn't get your hopes up. It probably tastes like fish.
