Split Text by Cameron

September 1st, 2006 2:50 PM

INSTRUCTIONS: Write a short story, dialogue, instruction pamphlet or text of your choosing. Split it into small segments and distribute the segments individually in the form of door-to-door fliers. You may use the reverse madlibs technique to generate your text.

Five Variations on Six Parts

Before I joined SF0, I happened to observe someone posting a story in multiple parts along a road in the park. They approached on motorcycle, and posted full pages of text on lampposts, and took of, as if pursued. It stuck with me, and I spent my first few days on this site looking for that proof. It seems that that act was unaffiliated, yet the idea was in my head like a hook.

I took a while to do this; first choosing an poem I had written for my special lady friend, and dividing it into stanzas; then attaching small archetypal images to each piece.

Apologies, for the recent mushiness. I promise my next task will be sappiness-free.

This was odd for me, as I've never really been proud of my poetry, and I was going to be posting it up for all to see. In fact, I actively do not like my own poetry. So I chose this text specifically because it made me nervous.

Variation 1

I posted them in a straight line along a street near my home. Each piece had the location of the next and previous pieces, the cross street and the corner it was on.

These were the earliest posted, and they are still up. I've never seen anyone take so much as a glance at them, which was almost comforting at first.

Variation 2

I placed each one under the windshield wipers of a row of cars. Each one had numbers directing them to the 'Car Behind' or the 'Car In Front'.

I enjoyed the idea of this one, as it was the least permanent and the least likely to be read in it's entirety.

Variation 3

I placed these along a single block near my work, when I was working late one night. These had no clues as to the location of the next, but they were all less than 30 feet from each other.

Variation 4

I arranged these in a Spiral around 6 blocks in the Marina. Each had this Map posted on it:

(The Curvy Street is to mark Lombard, natch.)

I actually saw people reading these as I went back and took pictures; which was a bit of a thrill. One women seemed to orient herself along the map, and then began walking towards the next one. I like to think she followed the whole spiral.

Variation 5

The final set I deposited in an apartment building, with exactly six boxes. It seemed to fortuitous to pass up. I tried to write on each to see their neighbors for the other piece, but tragically my pen ran out of ink.

That last Variation was today, and I feel like I've put up enough runs to post a proof. Oddly, this was one of my most nerve racking tasks, as I deliberately chose a style of writing that embarrassed me; even though no one outside of SF0 will know I was the author. I have a few more sets, and I may continue leaving them around the city, but I feel like I have a good start here...
