Wild Parrots by Cameron

July 27th, 2006 1:10 PM

INSTRUCTIONS: Photograph a wild parrot of telegraph hill.

NOW WITH NEW PICTURES AND VIDEOS!

I'm lucky to work at the Northern edge of the Wild Parrots habitat, the Presidio. The last time I went to Telegraph Hill, the sqwaky bastards were no where to be seen. Fortunately, they make a perfectly predictable trip through the grounds of my office. I was lucky enough to catch one sitting still for a while in a palm tree this morning. Usually, they swarm and swoop and dive, and never stay in one place for too long, but this solitary bird, who I will call Marvin from now on, seemed content to hang out, and holler in his foreign parrot tongue for quite some time. As I write this, Marvin is still in the tree. Hi Marvin.

This also marks the first use of my new camera. Goodbye crappy cell phone shots. Hello hi-def Marvin.

Later I caught Marvin hanging with some pals, and tooks some better pictures, and a few minutes of video.

Video Courtesy of You Tube.

If you listen close to the very end, you can hear one of the producers saying: Cam, what the fuck are you doing?

I live up by the tower, and see these guys fly overhead all the time, but this is the first time I've actually "seen" one up close. Hooray for yor new camera.

The little guys are loud. Maybe somone (or me) can get a good recording of them.

I can't give you a good recording, but I can offer up this: Here'smy recording of a flock of them. This was done with celphone and the warcat, so the quality is less than optimal.

The video has got some good sound of the parrots, and some of me goading them into speaking, unsuccesfully.

I hear these parrots, if one listens to them late at night, can be heard to squawk things like "Han shot first!" and "Work on a Sunday?"
