The City As A Supermarket by Cameron, Joshua Kelly, Al gae

May 31st, 2006 6:58 PM

INSTRUCTIONS: Create a map showing at least 5 locations of free food within the city: fruit trees, raspberry bushes, accessible food-laden dumpsters, etc.

Counterclockwise from Top Left

1) On the cliffs of Lands End, you can find Wild Strawberries, tiny and tart.

Fun Fact! The modern supermarket strawberry is a crossbreed between the wild strawberries, native to our homeland here, and the European Strawberry, which was large and flavorless

2) Blackberries can be found all around Lake Merced and in Fort Funston

Fun Fact! Blackberries are an aggregate fruit that is composed of many smaller fruits called drupes

3) Miner's Lettuce is everpresent in Golden Gate Park

Fun Fact! Native Americans used to layer it around ant hills, to pick up spicy formic acid for flavoring

4) Avocado Tree of Mystery. Josh doesn't know where it is, but he's eaten it's fruit

Fun Fact! Cameron really doesn't like avocados. He can't tell you why, either.

5) The Lemon Trees of the Mission will provide tart fruit for those so inclined

Fun Fact! Meyer's Lemons are the best type of Lemons. No argument is possible

6) Nasturtiums are made entirely of food; the stalk, the leaves, the petals and the seeds can all be eaten with a little preperation

Fun Fact! Nasturtiums name literally means "Nose Twister"; try mixing the petals and the leaves with Miner's Lettuce for a rockin' salad

People doing tasks that haven't been done before rock.

Oh?

Shat, are we the first?

We're in unknown territory, people!

What my special gentleman friend has forgotten to mention, is that the strawberries are very very sandy, being used, as they are, as erosion control for the sandy hills. Bring a small bowl of water to wash them in, if you plan on indulging..

Oh, yes, and what the lovely Ms. G also has told me, is that I may have accidentally switched our nasturtium picture, for one of wild radishes, which can also be found at Land's End.

Mea Culpa!

Mysteries Abound

I want to explain something about the mystery fruit.

I do not know the exact location of these edibles, because every so often they appear, filthy and at random, on my kitchen counter. I ask my roommate:

"Hey, where did these twenty avocado's come from?"

"Oh, from a tree."

"uh-huh, where?"

"Oh, in the mission, in my friend's backyard."

"Okay."

"I'm making guacamole, you want some?"

"Yes. Yes I do."

So there's the mystery. Not only did my roommate fail to divulge the exact locations where the fruit can be found, I also felt best not to go stomping around the private property of his freinds to pinpoint their location. The other plants can be found on public land, as if there should be a difference.

The avocados were smaller then the store bought varaiety, and hand brown patches on the rinds, but were delicious. The lemons were almost exactly like the store bought variety, but spoiled very quickly, leading me to wonder what it is we're ingesting when we get them from safeway.

Thanks for the votes everyone!

Nice!

This is amazingly awesome. Except... who the hell doesn't like avocados?

Thanks!

And, I don't like avacados

They taste like dirt and feel like paste.
