Work is So Strange by Bill

August 20th, 2006 6:28 PM

INSTRUCTIONS: Describe in some detail the strangest thing that happened to you at work in the past week. If you don't work, describe the strangest thing that happened to you during a leisure activity.

In general I despise talking about work. Work is something I do for 8 hours a day and then expect to forget about it for the other 16 hours of the day. Unfortunately for me, my parents and my wife both feel the need to ask me how my day was and want more details than "fine." Since I just had to describe my work week to my parents, I figured why not to SF0 too ;)

My day is split up rather well with the first part of the day being set aside for my "routine" items (database queries, letter mailing, e-mail responses, and voicemail returns). The second part of my day is for database/query design, data entry, and random other tasks. The third and final part of my day is to deal with customers in the "front office".

Out of everything I do all day, the "front office" sucks the worst. There are two reasons for this:

1. People generally suck.

2. It's not very busy and I can't do anything else -- it's boring.

On Thursday I'm working up there, trying to not be so bored that I feel death tapping me on the shoulder, and someone asks a question. I didn't hear him the first time (I don't always hear well as it is) and he went completely crazy.

He spent over five minutes, most of which I couldn't hear because he was mumbling in a strange pitch, berating me about how rude I was. Now, mind you, I *am* rude; quite rude to be perfectly honest, but I wasn't NOT being rude this time.

After he was done, I asked him to repeat most of what he said because I didn't get it the first time -- in all honesty -- to which he replied, "you must be retarded."

Yes, that's me and that's my story.
