Six (or more) Degrees of Kevin Bacon's rock band by Bill

Well, for whatever reason I decided to start with Dianna Ross. I'm in no way a Dianna Ross "fan". I certainly have no problems with her music, but I have never purchased any and there are plenty of others I'd rather listen to first. Anyway, she was the first one to come to mind.
I am, however, a Grateful Dead fan. I can't really see their similarities right now, although I'm sure someone could find some, but we'll see where this journey takes us:
Dianna Ross
Smokey Robinson
Stevie Wonder
The Jackson 5
Mick Jagger
The Black Crowes
Grateful Dead
---
Now, I guess I half influenced the chain of events that came after Dianna. I was trying to narrow choices that would eventually lead to the Grateful Dead in a reasonable amount of time. I assume that I could have played cat and mouse with the artists and made the lists 100s of miles long but in the interest of time I figured this would be about the same...
What I want to know is *how* they decide who is simliar to who. I'm sure Mick Jagger is dying a little inside that he is being listed as "similar" to the Jackson 5. :)
