Journey to the End of the Night - May Day 2010 by Gerald Browder

July 14th, 2010 9:22 AM

INSTRUCTIONS: May Day 2010: Minneapolis and Chicago

The city spreads out before you. Rushing from point to point, lit by the slow strobe of fluorescent buses and dark streets. Stumbling into situations for a stranger's signature. Fleeing unknown pursuers, breathing hard, admiring the landscape and the multitude of worlds hidden in it.

For one night, drop your relations, your work and leisure activities, and all your usual motives for movement and action, and let yourself be drawn by the attractions of the chase and the encounters you find there.

If you participated in this two-city simultaneous Journey in any way (as a player, chaser, or volunteer), please post your story here. Tell us your story of fear, lust, pain, speed, alienation, loneliness, hate, and desire.

I went to the event with three friends of mine initially but soon after we started one of my friends realized she didn't have the right footwear for such a long excursion so her and her boyfriend decided to drop out before making it to the first checkpoint. After that myself and the companion who remained proceeded to be what I believe was one of the last teams to reach the first checkpoint which set the stage for us nearly missing the deadline for the next three checkpoints despite the fact that we hadn't run into any chasers (Although we did stop by our friends job off Franklin Ave. since we'd gotten a bit hungry and knew we'd be able to get some free rice). After leaving Elliot park we were pretty confident that we were now making good time and had found a path that seemed to avoid all the pink ribbons, but we didnt get more than a block away from that park when we heard footsteps approaching so we jettisoned the boxes of rice and proceeded to lose the girl who'd spotted us (Silentseas I think) by going through a crowd of confused looking college students. After that we got a bit more cautious especially as we made our way downtown, stopping when we recognized a participant of the game in large Dr. Suess looking hat since we had no way of knowing if he was now a chaser. We got closer and realized he still had his green ribbon but had simply been seperated from his group so he tagged along with us for a moment. I say a moment because not two minutes went by before we saw a group of girls walking leisurely walking our direction, each of them wearing a pink ribbon. There was a brief moment when they seemed to be deciding if they felt like actually chasing us, but as soon as they began running we immediately split up, I myself ran across the street through incoming traffic and as a result ended up wandering into the somewhat hidden park nestled in downtown which was in fact our next checkpoint. For just a second I was worried my friend had been tagged but he called me and we met up and proceeded head for the finish, encountering a couple more chasers along the way who were discouraged due to how close we were to a bus stop/safe point. As we neared the area which we knew was the end of the race, we realized how lame it would be to get caught walking right up the stairs to the final checkpoint so we went around back and climbed up a low wall so we could silently emerge from the dark bushes on the other end of the park. When we got to the table we recieved our trophy like flower from the girl who'd been the first one to chase us, and she explained the despite the fact that we were so utterly distracted that we'd orignally walked right by her before she began chasing us we still had placed 11th and 12th in the night long journey. Considering we got lost several times, had an utterly slow start, and even stopped for food I can live with being just shy of the top 10.
