Remove A Task: The Task by Salty Pete

August 21st, 2006 2:12 AM

INSTRUCTIONS: The mechanics of SF0 depend sensitively on the distribution of tasks and points. Too many easy tasks and high level players will neglect the hard tasks. Too few, and players will be unable to reach the difficult tasks.

Help restore balance to the game by nominating a task for retirement. Your nomination should review all completions of the task, including highlights and low points, and assess what we collectively can learn from this task.

I would like to recommend a category of tasks for deletion. These tasks are those which are simply one line of text that is the same as the title, for example:

Hang-glide over the volcano. The description reads "Hang-glide over the volcano"

I understand jokes and things like that, but these kinds of tasks increase the signal to noise ratio in an unfavorable manner.

Yar, ye stole me idea!

I was gonna nominate this string of tasks for removal. It clutters the queue, and for the most part, they are impossible to complete; or if they are possible, they're pointless and don't accomplish anything.

Just for the record, I am not singling out the Rubin's series of tasks here. My objections are to all tasks that have very little information.

"What do cellphones mean?", "Snakes on a plane"...

There are exceptions. The high score task is pretty much a one liner however, there is a point. The tower is part of our SF lives. We see it all the time. Its a part of SF and therefore planting a flag on it would be something epic that is topical to the city and therefore the game.

"Stranger's Taxi" is also short on info, however, it has something to do with the group with which is associated... "Material Response To Derrida-Stumping Question" is the same way.

I would just like for tasks to be more than "Do this wierd thing"...
