Secret Word Browser Plugin by Salty Pete

July 19th, 2006 12:35 AM

INSTRUCTIONS: Create a plugin for a web browser (we prefer Firefox, natch) that retrieves the Secret Word of the Day from a server (this is a must - everyone using the plugin must have the same word). When the user goes to a website that uses the Secret Word of the Day, the word should become highlighted, and there should be a very noisy (visually and auditorially) display of excitement - ideally, this would include things like sliding CD-ROM trays in and out, flipping the screen off and on, etc. In keeping with the plugin's inspiration, the user should probably be informed of what the Secret Word is in advance.

A possible variant of this task would be a Secret Website of the Day, which a user would not be informed of in advance.

Holy Moley. I think I did it. This task took most of the last four or so days. (Since I was learning as I went. If I was to do it again, it would propbably take a long afternoon.) Here it is.

The extension only works in FireFox. I think you should be able to just click the file below and have it install. If not, save the file (secretword.xpi) to your desktop then drag it into a FireFox window.

It will not let me upload it, so I think this should work: Download from my personal webpage.

There is no currently no "loud" announcement of the secret word. If you want to know what it is, check the tools menu.

Oh. My. God.

More to come

I am going to make it louder and sillier in the future. Saddly, I was unable to find a way to make FireFox open the CD tray, but I did try.

I think more people outside of SF0 need to see this... can we link the download to firends and family?

Yes, please share it!

I am going to upload it to the Firefox Extension Site in the next couple of days. I just wanted to let a smaller group of people try it first.

I made a little page for this purpose.

It's not just for fun...

It's also a valuable learning tool.

Ok... you finally get my vote for this. It's been months since I installed the plugin, but it wasn't until today that I actually hit the secret word.

Today's word

This was the first time I had to turn it off; it was being triggered on nearly every webpage I hit.

Best plugin ever.

Nice word! I think I'm going to turn it off for the day as well.

This has urged me to make a few additions. I'm going to add the following features:

1) a button that says, "I found the word, please dont bug me again today."
2) a property that lets you turn off opening the extra window

Any other suggestions?

If anyone is interested in helping out with the app, I created a page that lets you interface with the database of words. I mostly created it because I wanted a way to remove super common words from the list, but you can also use it to suggest words. Then I forgot all about it. If you are interested in helping add/remove words, please let me know. I would love it if the secret word was "superaclifragilisticexpiallidocious" one day. ;)

No love for mac
