Trespassing by JR Bobb Dobbs
April 16th, 2007 9:07 AM
I set out on this task with the goal of simply trespassing, period. But I'm going to put a more BARTPA spin on this one, since all of my trespassing was either directly inspired by new contstruction on the CTA, or occured within visual proximity of the CTA, and was able to glimpse the trains from another perspective, when they always look like futuristic human transport devices, where the community gathers in a combined effort of cooperation.
Mission accomplished.
1. Rooftop. I originally was going to steal away to the roof of the 4-story brick building that houses the gym I work at on the first floor, but as I was approaching the back staircase, my attention was immediately grabbed by a more "off-limits" alternative.....new construction two doors down. They had just installed the framework of the back staircase, and it was just sitting there, going three stories up; never mind that there was no railing and missing landings when the staircases doubled back, and a few missing steps. It was completely sturdy otherwise. Didn't get all the way to the top of the building, but three stories up onto a private balcony was totally worth it. Not to mention, me and my non-sf0 accomplice enjoyed a nice toast of glenfiddich atop our perch, and I danced a nice soft-shoe number to celebrate location one. The image below of the skyline with train and me dancing come from the rooftop. Also, the exterior glass door leading into the apartment from the building had a piece of tape in the middle of it, WITH KEYS ATTACHED. Lo and behold however, the keys were on the INSIDE of the door; Thwarted. No worries, on to round two.
2. Soccer field. This field has been so close to home, but I've never taken the initiative to trespass....the drive was never there. THANKS SF0! Ever since the field was converted to a faux-grass surface, i've been even less enthusiastic about it, but it's a relatively wide open space that I've only ever been able to look at, so it was obvious number two. This one took more coaxing by me on my aider and abetter, but she conceded; although the inspiration struck me, she denyed my amorous advancement in the direction of an open air rendezvous. Zounds!
3. CTA construction. Being a BARTPA member, I am drawn to the public transportation. The stations near my abode are under construction, obvious targets. However, the CTA is working 24-hour shifts (that is, one guy is welding, and 3 guys are supervising) so my original destination was off limits. (sidebar: I suggested that we commandeer some hard hats, pick up and carry something somewhere, and spit once in a while, and we'd blend right in....No dice. Thwarted again.) However, skirting our intended destination, I noticed the construction going on across the street was done for the night, so we ventured there for location 3. This was a little gritter, and intimidating, but of local significance: This was the site of the former culinary icon Demon Dogs, now nothing more than a memory. RIP Demon Dogs.
More later; just wanted to get this proof submitted.....

Trespass 2

Soccer/softball field. Those are the outfield bleachers, outfield fence, and train stop in the image. There's an entire fence running all around this field at the fullerton station, on DePaul campus.
gritty, yeah?

Luckily, no run-ins with the riff raff; interestingly enough though, we did crawl into this space while there was a cop crossing the street away from us. Risky!

Demon Dogs closed?
That's some excellent trespassing. I like that you were drawn to CTA space.
