Clever Vandalism by hmrpita (Lenore), Ariock Knight
June 16th, 2008 3:45 PM / Location: 37.791604,-122.4275The original labyrinth was designed by hmrpita in google maps.
We then drove/ran the labyrinth with some new and old friends.
Feel free to take a look at my Flickr set for pictures and video.
This is the resulting .kmz file (viewable in google earth):

*AHEM*
"Vandalize cleverly. Go beyond simple graffiti and do something extra special."
Too clever?
The "where" is SF.
vandalizing? or littering?
seriously, though... there's some brilliant minds at work here... just not
at the task
at hand.
oh snap.
Perhaps if you indicated what you felt the inadequacy was, I could address it.
Maybe the problem was that the link above was broken. I believe I've fixed it now, so you may directly view the path data that was generated from our travels.
I see Graffiti as moving one's hands with direction to apply artwork to some surface. The art may be transitory. Our movement through the streets were transitory, directed, and drawn using our whole bodies on the face of the city itself over the course of five hours.
hmm. i guess the inadequacy is my own; i don't have google earth. and i don't care to acquire it to view a praxis. if you could get some kind of fixed image to appear on this page, it might help people understand what you're going for.
i hope i didn't offend or irritate (too much) with my above criticism. it sounds like you have something quite out-of-the-box here from the comments below. perhaps i'll hijack a friends computer and check it out.
and on anna one's charge of being too literal- perhaps that is true. i do very much think of graffiti and vandalism as leaving one's mark- a sort of existential resistance. it's such a primeval tendency.
Hm. Without google earth, it's doesn't appear as much more than a series of points, marking out our location as time passed. I could show you an overall screen shot, but that wouldn't be much more interesting than the google map I linked to above....
Actually, you've given me a good idea. I'll take some shots of the map in Google Earth from various angles and post those pictures here. You'll be able to see what you're (possibly) missing.
They've added a very clever vandalism to my google maps- and I'm satisfied with that. (Besides O Time Thy Pyramids is retired...)
Welcome back to the game Ariock and hmrpita, I'm happy to see you!
ps. What's the omphalos made from? Looks kinda like an ostrich egg in there...
It's a large ostrich-egg shaped stone. We actually had to walk the last 5 or so blocks of the labyrinth, so I lugged it to the end. It's draped in a handmade knotted net for half-assed authenticity:

Yeah, this one is pretty elusive at first because folks expect spray paint on buildings, or something not too dissimilar. I like this completion because it isn't as literal as that. It's quite meta.
They've superimposed a giant design on the city! And then they traveled it! That's awesome!
I want surveyor spray paint on sidewalks.
susy, that's painting, not vandalizing! silly.
but thanks for showing everyone, anyway! :)
Simply 'mazing.
And yes, it is great to see you two back in the game.
God, I'm all about the puns this week.
Ah! I just got it! You guys *are* the spray paint can! Whooooosh!
Despite the fact that I wouldn't call it vandalism: amazing. And that's more important than fitting the definition, I think. Vote!
Vandalizing? Huh? Where's that?
