TOOTH DECAY!!!!
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!!!
I am more than a little FREAKED OUT. I have never had a cavity in my life, and now I've got this black spot near the root of a tooth, eating enamel away and inward. It doesn't hurt at all, which is why I hadn't spotted this until it got this far, so maybe that's good? I don't know, I've never had problems with my teeth of this nature! There is a void of information here. Consider this your chance to perform an Information Insertion, maybe.
Despite the fact that I brush every day, I'm blaming the following bad habits: a) having cut out milk from my diet after developing a lactose intolerance, so it's more than likely I'm not getting enough calcium, and b) having started to drink coffee again at work over the last two months or so. Not to mention holiday gift-basket candy we have around there as well that gets dipped into occasionally.
Bad, bad, bad. I'm making a dentist appointment today and cutting out the coffee and candy. Gah!

I have a friend who has all black teeth, but no cavity problems, the darkness coming from the drinking of the black stuff. You may be alright afterall, just a little reminder from the coffee gods...
Thanks for the info, Saul Z. Coffee has been cut out completely (not hard since I really didn't drink caffeine anyway, at least before this recent coffee-as-social-mingling-with-coworkers methodology), and I realized yesterday later on, comparing that tooth with the same tooth on the other side, that the black spot seen in the photo is actually where my gums have receded. So it's possible I have crazy gingivitis. Which is still an AAAAAAH! situation, so I've got a dentist appointment set up. It's time.
Went to the dentist, turned up with 3 cavities. Two of them (including the one pictured here) are done with, I go back in a few days to take care of the third. Weird part I was not expecting: afterwards I was in NO PAIN. Even when the novocain wore off. Either my dentist is great or my cavities aren't that deep.
