I forgot that I had gone supply-hunting for this task back in March, and then my appendix burst and I never got around to using them. One of the things I rediscovered when I was looking for materials was that two magnifying glasses, when held at the proper distance apart, will pass a clear (or mostly clear) image to the viewer, only upside down. Using two imperfect toy magnifying glasses tinted lightly pink and blue, I constructed a telescopic barrel out of empty toilet paper rolls and just taped the whole thing onto my camera. Because of the length of the tube, if I wanted to avoid the porthole effect, I had to zoom the camera in about halfway.

The pictures that I ended up taking with the new apparatus were strange, warbly, and of course upside down. I took some from Kite Hill and those turned out just slightly strange enough, as if I were floating below an upside-down city. Tonight I took some pictures of the fireworks as seen from a distance in our living room, and those turned out as if shot from a car wash.

Now if only I could figure out how to make glasses or goggles in a similar fashion that could mediate my reality for a few hours...
