For my initial SF0 task:
1) First I snapped a low-light Polaroid of myself.
2) Then I trimmed the Polaroid photo with scissors and edged it with tin tape.
3) I scorched the tin tape (and damaged the photo image itself) with matches.
4) After a few unsuccessful attempts at proper lighting, I used a yellow bug light to illuminate the Polaroid while taking a photo of it using a digital camera. The yellow bulb, in combination with the warped plastic coating of the Polaroid after using the hot matches on it, are what cause the "flame" effect. You can also see some of the match damage around the edge of the foil frame.
5) I uploaded the digital snapshot to my old computer, then cropped it in Photoshop and did some other quick meddling to bring out the image a little better.
That's it.
