Fan Letter by Cthulhu Kitty

July 9th, 2007 5:25 PM

INSTRUCTIONS: Identify someone you have never met but genuinely admire, who is not in a profession where they would typically receive fan letters. Write them a fan letter, send it, and post any response.

(The Submit Proof button has been disintermediated - the text that follows was written by Sean, to whom all snarky grammar corrections and other such comments should be directed.)

I returned home one day to find our mail carrier had left us a large tyvek envelope, addressed to Sam, from a very strange return address. It sort of felt like a book, which wasn't quite interesting enough to prompt a federal crime, so I took off again.

What a fool I was! I returned home to find that not only had Cyber Kitty written to us, and not only had she seen fit to include a gift, and not only was the gift an American flag, but it was - according to a nicely calligra-phied certificate - Official. The accompanying letter, gushed about the best web designers / game developers ever - and in turn, we each read it, went from appreciative to even a little embarrassed, and then flipped it over to read the second, "how d'ya like my Fan Letter?" side (I, at least, thought this was hilarious).

In any event, definitely amazing (I'll leave it to CK to divvy the proof up accordingly). An American flag makes for an interesting gift - cramming in associations with friendship, SFZero, childhood, Iraq, heraldry (just wanted to get that interesting link in), and (of course) the world's lone-and-sometimes-lonely remaining superpower. Thank you very much, from all of us!

Staring off...

Staring off...

This is a rich image. Ian, in headphones and motorcycle-ish jacket, represents the future. Sam - square-jawed and beret - stands for the military (or perhaps just MUNI). Sean, all mussed hair and baggy eyes, must've wandered into the picture accidentally.

Over there - the FUTURE!

Over there - the FUTURE!

Authentic? Oh quite.

Authentic? Oh quite.

"Sean, Sam, Ian, and all of SFzero .... This certifies that the accompanying flag was flown over the Headquarters of the Multi-National Corps-Iraq in your honor during Operation Iraqi Freedom."

Wrapped in the flag (as always, yah?)

Wrapped in the flag (as always, yah?)

This was cool to do in the 80s, right?

Sorry, this is terribly blurry! I'll upload a better photo when I get home.
