Language "Encryption" by K. Signal Eingang

May 23rd, 2006 12:17 AM

INSTRUCTIONS: Using online translation tools, "encrypt" some text (that you write or find) by translating it multiple times into different languages and then back into English.

For instance, "The drive to play San Francisco Zero" translated from English to German to French to Italian to English again becomes "The order of Saint game Francisco".

i:"Colourless green ideas sleep furiously."
o: "You do not think about how its ecological activities forces voluntary sleep."

I was trying to transcrypt nonsense into sense, and somehow found myself with a line from Mothra vs. Godzilla. Close enough, I guess.

I started with English->Japanese->English, thence to Arabic, and from there hit practically every translator at least once, with the exception of Italian, which always left behind straggler words that refused to be translated into any other language. The switch from "green" to "ecological" happened somewhere between German and French and from there it was smooth sailing. Kicking it from English->Simplified Chinese->English repeatedly seemed to be a good way to get Google to improvise pronouns and linking words where none were present before, which was handy.

OK!

I used the same sentence for "photographic sentence".

Inquiring minds: are you the robot or the girl?
