The Highest Place by Theo Playfoot

April 13th, 2009 12:00 PM / Location: 41.884968,-71.96341

INSTRUCTIONS: Go to the highest point of anything.

I went up into the clock tower of my school's main building.
Unfortunately there is no way to see out from the tower as there are no windows or slats.
I did manage to take lots of pics and got some sound bites of the clock that i may post later.
I spent a little time up there and enjoyed the ambience, of this old, beautiful place. I was also allowed to wind the clock.

School Building

This is the building where the tower is located.

Old Electronics

Old Electronics

I have no clue what these things were, but there were a couple set ups like this around the attic.

Antenna

Antenna

Old TV antenna in the attic i went through to reach the tower.

This is the bottom of the clock platform. The big white spot is where the ladder up is. The bottom of the pendulum and some of the weight system is visible.

clock face

That is the inside of the clockface.

Clock Works

Clock Works

Part of the clock mechanism. Unfortunately there wasn't enough room to back up far enough to take a pic of the whole mechanism.

Clock Face Gears

Clock Face Gears

Some gears on the backside of the clock face. You can see one of the clock makers' signature.

bell

The inscription on the bell.

More Gears!

More Gears!

More beautiful gear goodness.

Side view of some of the gears.

Last Pic

Last Pic

This was the last pic I took. This window is at one end of the attic and was frosted over (I think, it might have just been large amounts of dust or something).

clock tower audio

Sounds from the clock tower. the first minute 20 seconds or so is the sound of me winding the clock. the rest is the calming tick-tock and some occasional voice snippets i believe, as my fellow explorers and I engaged in some conversation while enjoying the ambience.

More pics of this task would be good. Clockwork is awesome, as are high places, but the pics you have here don't really do either justice, I suspect. Share more of that ambiance...

Seconded. The pics you've got are enough to make me want to see the rest.

I will add some pics of the AWESOME attic that you walk through to get to the tower. All sorts of beautiful ambience, old beautiful antennas, electronics, and of course all those clock works. I will post some of my faves and some pics of the bell. One of the coolest parts of the experience was that i got to wind the clock. More on that later along with the sound clips.
