Dogmatics 101: Know Why by Kat Meow

July 13th, 2006 5:25 PM

INSTRUCTIONS: Do you think dogma means rigid authoritarian beliefs? Time for Dogmatics 101!

Karl Barth writes "Dogmatics is the science in which the Church, in accordance with the state of its knowledge at different times, takes account of the content of its proclamation critically..."

Critically account for what you believe and say by enumerating some or all of your beliefs and describing where they come from and what they mean.

I believe life is beautiful.
To have so many words for beauty (Roget's Thesaurus contains 4 entries for "beauty" with 55 synonyms, Wikipedia's entry on beauty contains over 1600 words detailing the definition, social spects, history of, deification of, and theories of beauty) is to acknowledge the common acceptance of beauty as a perceivable thing in our world. Since all things in thought and in matter are part of our existance and our existance is considered life, life must, therefore, be beautiful for being comprised of things we perceive beauty in.

I believe the Roman Empire was really the Borg.
The Roman Empire expanded by conquering other peoples and survived by assimilating those peoples into the Roman culture creating a unified culture of the individuals that had been assimilated.

I believe Silly Putty makes life better.
Have you ever had a really bad week, month, year? Get dumped? Been depressed? Been lost on your path in life? Have you ever come home to a small, padded envelope with your name as the addressee? Did you pick up that package and idly fondled it mildly confused and very curious where this mysterious package came from? Did you rip it open in a combination of excitement at that little thought "I got mail!" (you read that in an AOL voice didn't you?) and perplexity at the source of this item of mild excitement in an otherwise bleak and uneventful day in your dull and depressing life? Did you find in there a small egg? An egg, that when cracked open, reveals a soft, impressionable, flexible, putty? Maybe glowed in the dark or left bits of glitter on your fingers? Maybe the sender impressed a Get Fuzzy comic on it before rolling it into that red plastic egg. Maybe your mysterious silly putty sender sculpted it into something (a cat, a Kama Sutra illustration, etc) before dropping it in the mail. Regardless of how it came, your day has now been improved by Silly Putty.
