The Highest Place by Kommando
May 7th, 2009 7:30 PM
Video for completion.
i thought about the task and read the existing praxis and considered my options. i could try and find the highest point in the state but australia has the problem of being fecking huge and full of open inaccessible space. perhaps the highest point in SE QLD... meh same problem.
Everyday life struck me and i considered the places i frequent a lot.
so i decided to get to the highest point on my street. which happens to be on top of my house.
The first challange was to get onto the first storey, the side of the house has a few large rotting wooden beams straddling some free standing wall. i jumped up pushing off the wall and after a few tries managed to grab onto one of the terribly wobbly beams and pulled myself up. i took a look around and surveyed my street, its only 4 houses but i was already higher than anything else on my street, except the power lines. behind me was the second storey, with some flimsy wooden blinds over the windows, they looked pretty dangerous and might not hold my weight if i stood on them. i tapped on the window and waved to Jen inside.
just then a postman pulled up and jumped out to deliver a parcel. feeling the chance for surpraxis i shouted out "hey! up here!".
"huh what?" the confused and distracted mailman replied.
"up here, what'cha got there?"
"Package for denis sem.. sam...chen... samchenk...", my housemate has a wierd name, the ninja turtles movie flashed in my head and i asked him to deliver the mail, to me on the roof.
"i'll take that", i hollered and the postie stretched out to hand me a package.
"whatcha doing up there?" he said a little puzzled, distraction completed!
"uh... maintainance."
"fair 'nuff, have a good day!" he returned to his truck and drove off, as i checked my camera and found it hadnt been recording my postman distraction. ah well. decided to record my camera issues and deliver the mail back to the ground.
but the task at hand hadnt been completed so i stretched up and climbed onto the flimsy wooden blinds, they complained loudly at the weight applied to them and i grabbed hold of the tiles several feet above me, fingertips slipped on crumbling mortar and powdered mould and i slipped. my dirty shoes marked the wall and i unsteadily landed on the tiles below, retaining my balance. hmm bit more difficult than i thought. i paced up and down the wall looking for a better spot but the first storey fell away at the edges with nary a handhold. there was also power lines i wished to avoid. it was at this point i saw the house next door and the peaked roof almost, maybe just was higher than my house.
unfazed by not living in the highest house around i climbed back onto the blinds and stretched, then jumped slightly, i grabbed hold of the roof and braced my feet against the wall, the black mould on the creamy white wall stood out like dogs balls but i was getting ontop of my house. i heaved and threw my arm over the sharply declining far side and hauled myself up.
i did it, i was on my roof.
the view was spectacular, i was certainly the at highest point in my street, barring some insurmountable trees.
my next door neighbours have a pool. i want a pool.
i looked down over the edge and felt a little giddy. i was pretty high up and only pavement would break my fall should i pitch over the edge. so i made a victory recording and tentatively lowered myself down to the first storey and then to the ground.
then for extra completion, i decided to get to the highest point of my parents house. Their house is a lot easier to mount, ive done it many many times in my youth so i should be pretty good at getting up. so i timed myself. 15.4seconds.
