The Death of Public Life In The Age of Insatiability by Ross

April 27th, 2008 3:52 PM

INSTRUCTIONS: Document all the public actions you take in a day. Additionally, document all the private actions you take that same day.

Graph your actions.

The Death of Public Life in The Age of Insatiability:
My first actual task and it seemed pretty fun. Once I have my digital camera I think I'll be doing a few more.

Public (something any given person could see me doing)
Thoughts and Emotions (private-in public area)
Private (things no one else sees)

7:00am: First Alarm goes off. I get up and turn it off because it is a few steps away from my bed.
7:01am: Set my Nintendo DS as a second alarm and go back to sleep.
7:30am: Second alarm goes off. I turn off my DS, but don't get up.
8:26am: After drowsing in my bed for almost an hour I get up, go pee and wash my hands.
8:28am: Put on over-sized sweater to stay warm and brush my teeth.
8:30am: Turn off the Weekday alarm set to tell me it is time to get ready to go to work.
8:31am: Sit down in front of my laptop to look at this task that I accepted last night.
8:32am: Finish brushing my teeth and start writing down this task.
8:40am: Catch up to with this task so far today and get dressed.
8:43am:
Now dressed in blue boxers, charcoal colored slacks, white socks and a
black, long sleeved shirt with a glow in the dark power symbol on the
front.

8:45am: Put on my watch, chain-mail bracelet,
fanny-pack and glasses as well as putting my cell phone
and traveling
stone in my pocket.

8:47am: Put on navy blue sweatshirt
from high school, ratty black shoes, bike gloves, bike helmet and
messenger bag. Also roll up pant legs so they don't get caught in my
bike chain.

8:55am: Grab my bike and walk out of the building.
9:00am: Bike to work taking side streets to Irving Park, Irving Park to Ashland and side streets from Ashland to where I work.
9:05am: Arrive at work earlier than usual but still 5 minutes late.
9:07am:
Chat with the new guy about Dvorak vs qwerty keyboard layout as he
finishes moving all the keys on his keyboard so that he can look at the
keyboard to see where his 'R' key is.

9:10am: Co-worker arrives and makes a comment about me being on time now and doing the person who I replaced a disservice.
9:15am: Get a glass of water and debate whether I want to go get cereal for breakfast or just wait till lunch?
9:30am:
Get food from co-worker and start finishing to make stubs for unit
tests for 1 of 25 files (also known as very boring programming).

9:31am:
Put on headphones with 5 hour long DJKDH tracks playing in a shuffled
loop. Just start from where I paused them some time last night.

10:05am:
Girlfriend signs onto AIM and we start chatting before she has to leave
for class.
I am still writing stubs for unit tests, although some I
fully intend to steal from tests already written.

10:35am:
Finish writing out unit test stubs for file. Time to find, copy and
paste already written unit tests to somewhere more logical.

10:40am: Cybering with girlfriend and taking a break from coding to check e-mail.
11:10am:
Feel relaxed after checking through reddit and reading up on the latest
Xubuntu release. I'm still not sure if I'd rather switch to Linux Mint
or upgrade to the latest Xubuntu.

11:15am: Go the 2 blocks to Trader Joe's to get more cereal for tomorrow morning and something vaguely lunch like.
11:55am: Return From Traders and cook food. I now have some Indian fare and blackberries. Definitely delicious.
Noon: Eating and thinking about how to write unit tests for the stubs I spent today and yesterday filling out.
12:45pm:
Still eating lunch, chatting with co-workers about Lisp (the
programming language) and starting to get back to programming.

1:15pm: Attempting to convince co-workers to join sf0 and cg0. There seems to be some interest.
2:15pm: Testing out how different functions work and thinking about how to write tests. I am feeling unproductive.
2:35pm: Searching through possible tasks to take after this one has become more enjoyable than trawling Reddit.
2:37pm:
Friend just left after interviewing with company. Kinda hope he gets
the job. Wondering if I should crush his hopes in the interim.

3:20pm:
Still don't know how I'm going to write these unit tests, but watching a co-worker use a
halogen desk lamp to melt wax out of a hard plastic tube seems very
interesting.
It has now been 5 hours since I wrote any code for my
task, but I am closer to figuring out the code I want to write.

4:00pm: Philosophical conversations about software at work are fun.
4:25pm: I have now resigned myself to being unable to work.
5:00pm: Find out that I can hack certain kinds of cannon digital cameras
5:30pm:
Buy a version of said hackable digital camera from newegg, because I've
needed a new camera ever since I gave away my last one as a Christmas
gift.

5:35pm: Bike home taking Waveland to Halstead and Halstead home.
5:40pm: Get home and get ready to go to Linux Club.
5:50pm: Refill water bottle and make a new batch of GORP (aka: Trail Mix for Midwesterners).
6:10pm: Finish making GORP and pack up everything to go to Linux Club.

6:15pm: Take public transit to Linux Club.
6:45pm: Arrive at Linux Club, put my stuff down and go to the bathroom.
7:00pm: Talk to people at Linux Club and be social.
11:10pm: Still at Linux Club talking with people who showed up.
11:30pm: We migrated outside the room we were meeting in because we were kicked out of the room.
12:30am: Move down stairs near the exit.
12:55am: Get kicked out of the building.
1:00am: Take the train back to my apartment with my girlfriend.
1:30am: Arrive in apartment with girl friend.
1:35am: Finish typing this out and go to bed with girlfriend. ^_^

number of words in each category:
Public: 530 words
Thoughts and Emotions: 158
Private: 193

What does this mean?  I'm much more descriptive about what I consider public than what is private.

Hey, chatting with your girlfriend on AIM doesn't qualify as private because it was seen by someone else... her. :-P *enjoys giving boyfriend a hard time*

Very thorough, and I quite like the public-in-a-private-area category.

Welcome to the game.
