Ethereal Cartography by Kushiel's Servant

November 26th, 2008 10:38 PM

INSTRUCTIONS: Make a map of something that does not exist physically.

The first picture is of internal (left) and external (right) armor. This is your most common type of meta-physical shielding. Armor will block most meta-physical attack. I prefer the internal armor (even with the necessity for slight damage taken) because I find it more flexible and easer to repair.

In the second picture I have attempted to represent Internal Organ shielding (left) and Fate shielding(right). The purpose of IO shielding is to aid in maintaining health and destroy sickness and pathogens before they can affect the body. Fate shielding is unlike your standard shielding in that it is not an active or passive shield, and (once set-up) the user has little to no control over it. It is simply letting fate aid your fine tuned actions (i.e. A moment of hesitation, a fraction of an inch in distance, a 1/16 of a gram in weight). This is especially useful for cooks, artists, carpenters, doctors, infantry, etc...

The third picture is a of a Mind shield (left) and two Density shields (right). A Mind shield is usualy used for two main reasons: to guard against mental intrusion from others (usually a Search and Destroy or Hunt and Gather), or to keep thoughts and/or emotions from yourself (you remember that one time when you wer drunk... well now you don't). The two shields on the left both share a common characteristic, their effectiveness relies on their density. The shield on the left (purple) is a Psi (Mental) shield. A mental shield does not need (and rarely does) exist at all the levels that I have shown. It is simply necessary to designate an area in which you will create a static mental field. This shield is very useful but can be extremely difficult to create and maintain. The shield on the right (blue) is a Bubble shield. Usually fairly simple. The strength of the shield depends on the amount (Density) of metaphysical energy that you put into it.

On the third picture, the mental vs. the bubble shield:

I find the dispersion pattern for the mental shield somewhat disturbing - particularly the area towards the bottom of the 3rd and 4th dashed lines out from the origin. It seems to widen here, only to contract again by the 5th - this is certainly an unacceptable regularity. I see what you mean about these being hard to maintain.
