Remove A Task: The Task by la flaneuse

August 10th, 2006 1:11 PM

INSTRUCTIONS: The mechanics of SF0 depend sensitively on the distribution of tasks and points. Too many easy tasks and high level players will neglect the hard tasks. Too few, and players will be unable to reach the difficult tasks.

Help restore balance to the game by nominating a task for retirement. Your nomination should review all completions of the task, including highlights and low points, and assess what we collectively can learn from this task.

I nominate A Roof With A View for retirement. It appears to have been a specific event with no apparent plans for recurrence and, as such, should be an archived event, as suggested generally in the comments here.

If archiving/retirement is undesirable, A Roof With A View could possibly be changed to a more flexible task than an event if reworded, but the current description is limiting: "SFZero will lead the way up. At the top we will provide a collaborative art project to work on." Unless we are all SFZero and players in other cities organize such projects... but still, this wording gives the impression of a specific organized event ("we will provide").

This task/event had 15 collaborators/participants and looked like a success, but it has not yet been repeated since its lone appearance in March 2006. The players went to the top of a hotel (at Laguna & Geary, yes?) in San Francisco's Japantown, where they made and tossed paper airplanes from the notes they wrote to strangers. (My favorite note from the proof: "It's not litter now that you've picked it up. It's a souvenir. Today is a good day.") Participants also made audio recordings describing what they saw from the roof, and as someone who wasn't there and isn't familiar with the area, it was fun to listen to the off-the-cuff descriptions and different takes on the view.

What can we collectively learn? Events are cool. Events are fun. Proofs like the March one are fantastic for players who couldn't be there.

But especially as the number of tasks increases as the game grows, perhaps event-specific tasks should be marshalled into their own category or subcategory and then archived if not intended to be recurring events.

SF0 is as flexible as you'd like to make it.

I think it would be good to have a section in the tasks menu for "archived" task that can no longer be completed.

Come to think of it

Maybe I should gather some friends on a roof with a view and we can make our own SF0 collaborative art project

Why not both?

Come to think of it, a lot of tasks could possibly be done as events (vs. regular collaborations). What would the best way be to distinguish between events and everything else? (Thinking........)

A Roof With A View could be rewritten as: "There is beautiful high place where you're not supposed to go in the center of the city. From there you can see many wonderful things. Go up to it. At the top, collaborate on an art project." Then if someone wants to organize it as an event in SF or Chicago or Plymouth, that works. And it could remain as a task that requires at least 2 players for a collaboration. Or something like that. I like this task and don't see an inherent need for its archival, but these kind of event-specific tasks can be confusing when you first get started in the game.
