Culinary Adventure by Loya, Gadget

August 8th, 2006 11:06 PM

INSTRUCTIONS: Combine two seemingly different food items to create a new meal/snack. These items should elicit an initial response somewhere along the lines of "yuck" or "gross", but should ultimately be delicious.

Consume the newly created culinary experiment and report your opinion.

For extra points, get someone who is not playing SFZero to try your new item.

Choco-Pesto Spread
While looking for inspirations for this task, Gadget and I came across two totally disparate food items in our refridgerator: some very garlicky homemade basil pesto and a flourless chocolate cake. Both very rich, both requiring only a small taste for intense flavor and both totally yummy on their own. But how would they be together?

We first each spread a small amount of pesto onto a tiny chunk of cake. We both found that one item would predominate followed by the other, depending on which one was of greater volume and which hit your tongue first. Not altogether unpleasant, but not really a true combination.

We decided they needed to be thoroughly mixed together and did so with a fork, creating a chunky green/brown paste. This time it was a genuine combo of flavors and an interesting experience for the palate. It seemed like all the distinct flavors were still there; sweet, salty, garlicky, chocolate, basil, but they presented themselves unpaired and out of order and mildly blended. I wouldn't go so far as to say 'delicious', but it really wasn't too bad. If you didn't know what it was and simply put it on crackers, it would be quite passable for company. Gadget licked it. Gadget liked it. But Gadget wasn't satisfied. "It needs something," he says, looking through the fridge.

Apparantly, he thought it needed to be turned into a beverage, because out comes a bottle of limeade!

At this point, I'm thinking, collaboration is over, he's on his own now. But I agreed to document out of morbid curiousity. So the remaining choco-pesto paste goes into a glass with a small amount of limeade. Looks like little chunks of poop at first, until he gives it a vigorous stirring. "Surprisingly good," he proclaims it, which naturally induces me to try it too. What did I think? Well, the following picture speaks for itself.

"At this point, I'm thinking, collaboration is over," hehe
I don't think I'd be trying it any time soon, but points to you for the concoction and documenting with video even!
