Work is So Strange by James Clark

August 22nd, 2006 3:48 PM

INSTRUCTIONS: Describe in some detail the strangest thing that happened to you at work in the past week. If you don't work, describe the strangest thing that happened to you during a leisure activity.

Well, the strangest thing that happened to me at work within the last week was that I was fired. Just suddenly fired. I had been hired at this place 2 months previous with an awesome sounding position description that I was excited about. After I started there was a meeting where my manager pointed out that none of us were doing the work detailed in our position descriptions, I agreed with him, and he said not to worry about it because they had inflated the position descriptions to justify the amount of money we were being paid. I didn't like the sound of that but I was desperate for money so I couldn't exactly take the ethical high road.

Meanwhile, the lady that was our local boss was always loud, fake baked (tanned), bleached blond, and obsessed with alcohol. She was always talking about drinking and laughing in some raucous harpy laugh that only a passed out frat boy could love. She even produced and distributed wine and beer at a 2pm all hands meeting one day.

So, the place really wasn't ideal, by a longshot. But, I needed a job so I wasn't complaining. Then Friday at 10am my manager asked me to meet with him and there were the papers and my final check, all ready for me. When I asked why I was being fired he just said 'it wasn't working out for both sides.'

So now I'm on the jobhunt again and mostly just puzzled about WTF happened and wondering whether the alcoholic just didnt' like me or what.
