Trespassing the Future by Non Players, Zoo Babies Pet Animals

July 2nd, 2008 6:53 PM

INSTRUCTIONS: Go to a place you will not be able to go to in 10 years; for instance, a place under development that will never be the same again.

Today my friend Andy and I went to a very large and fantastically famous cemetery in North St. Louis (near where Minxy and I did the Night Photography task). According the the lovely brochure, Bellefontaine Cemetery is:

-Recognized as an arboretum as well as a sculptural museum.

-The very first "rural" cemetery west of the Mississippi River.

-Designed by noted 19th century landscape architect Almerin Hotchkiss.

-Final resting place for 86,000 souls and counting!

-314 beautiful acres, 100 undeveloped (if you're looking for a place to push up the daisies)

-right next door to the Cavalry Cemetery, where Dred Scott, Tennessee Williams, and Kate Chopin are buried.

And, lots of famous people are buried here, including the entire Lemp family (who are famous for their multiple suicides and family madness). Minx and I visited the famous Lemp Caves in our Trespassing task.

The Lemp Family Haunted Mansion
William Lemp, the first Lemp family member to commit suicide in house (with a . 38)
Not to mention General William Clark of the Lewis and Clark Expedition who is
also buried in the cemetery.....

Oh, let us not forget William S. Burroughs

And the very first female Pulitzer Prize Poet, Sara Teasdale (whose poetry I am not impressed with after a short research session)

The cemetery is ever-growing and changing, as families evolve and members pass away, filling the mausoleums and grave plots. With about 1/3 still completely empty, it will grow within the future years until it is completely full. Here are pictures. Hopefully enjoy! Also, there is a surprise twist at the end for those who read the captions. Get excited.

ah yes. if there is one thing certain about the future it is death. i like that you incorporated that certainty into this task

A very thoughtful and clever completion of this task. I like that there is no morbidity in your assertion that the cemetery is going to fill up. Matter-of-fact acceptance of death coupled with beautiful pictures gets my vote.
