Reality Postcards Humanitarian Crisis by nicolette oliphant

July 12th, 2006 11:36 AM

INSTRUCTIONS: If all you knew about San Francisco was from our postcards, you'd think we did nothing but ride between china town and the golden gate bridg on shiny cable cars.

Find a scene or two that show our city's humanitarian crisis and turn it into a postcard. Include information about where the photo was taken. Mail it to someone who lives outside of the bay area.

this task reminded me of all the scenes they show at the end of the movie Kids.

The first photo really hits home for me and my experiences in San Francisco. I love the city to death but the images of the homeless and panhandlers stick in my brain as the main negative aspect of walking down the streets. Not that Minneapolis doesn't have the same problem, but for some reason it's more prevalent or poignant to me in San Francisco. Gets my vote for "reality postcard."

thanks

This task was fun and hard at the same time. I had a few other pics that I wanted to use, including a packed bus. I made the postcards by hand, so it was really time consuming. I did get to send the ones I made out, though. One of them being to a random adress I pulled off the interenet.

for me the crzy horse on market street has been one of my favorite san francisco experiences...
