Document a Street Dweller by nicolette oliphant

INSTRUCTIONS: Ever look at a person whom is homeless and wonder why they are out on the street? Ever see someone screaming into the wind and wonder what makes them crazy?

Ask them.

This is Danny. I have known him for almost a year, when I first started working at ZC. He was actually living in the alley, I guess hes been there for years. Everybody I work with knows him. When I got hired it was advised that I dont give him anything, but we do little thing for him when we can. Everynight around 11 he taps the window for a cup of coffee and somtimes polenta. Recently he got some kind of living place. He says he used to be a pro golfer, thats why he carries a golf club. He hits bottle caps through his legs for money from people coming out of the restaurant. Before they started building the apartments, there was a parking lot he would work for money, too. I have to say he does work really hard. In the past year I have never once seen him sit down, except when he was sleeping in the alley. He used to have a tent. I thought I remember him saying he doesnt use, but Im thinking he said he doesnt drink. Right before I took this photo I saw some guy buy rock from the junkies at the liquor store. I gave Danny 10 bucks, and he just took off right after the guy. I knew I should have bought him a pack of cigarettes, oh well.

I always wondered what he was doing

I've seen him before, swinging his golf club, and I thought he was just a crazy homeless guy with a weapon. I didn't realize that he was trying to make money by showing off his golfing skill. Too bad he had to conform to the stereotype by buying rock with the money you gave him.

Thanks for letting my know more about him.

I never realized that he could be thought of as dangerous because of the golf club. But I understand that, especially after spending the afternoon on a bike in the TL. To add I have never seen him raise his voice or be violent to anyone. Your responce made me glad I did this task. thanks
