Believe it or not, ancient does not imply out of use. The oldest thing in my fridge is probably the soya sauce, a glass bottle with a green plastic cap that's nearly impossible to open. I had to punch a hole in it with a steak knife to get past the safety cap, so without careful use it hoses down the stove, but the contents are still good and it compliments a stirfry.
The next oldest is the block of miso paste, clocking in at about a year. Does miso paste ever go bad? I'm not even sure how you'd tell, but a tiny spoonful turns bland ramen into something worth eating, so it'll be a sad day when I have to toss it.
Finally there's the salad dressing. There's about an inch of the stuff left, some sort of fancy orange flavoured gourmet blend, probably the only thing kept despite my dislike. Though I'd rather make my own dressing, it pleases my partner, so it's worth having.
The olives though, and the gerkins- those need to go.
