A Real Life Secret Egg by mock piratey turtle, Spidere

August 20th, 2008 12:12 AM

INSTRUCTIONS: You'll know what to do.

Early on, Spidere and piratey decided that it was too easy to combine Make Like Fletcher and this task, so instead we decide to go the route of hiding secret eggies at prom for people to discover.

As it turned out, Spidere had no idea what to do. He thought he did: he'd discovered (from a couple of sources) the process which Giovanni Battista Porta had used to write secret messages on hardboiled eggs. By mixing an ounce of alum with a liter of vinegar, one could create an ink. With this, one could write upon the surface of a hardboiled egg--the ink would seep through the shell, and write upon the hardboiled egg within, leaving no trace on the surface.

The notion of secret writing inside an egg one had just opened and was about to eat was seemed freaky and bizarre. It was very appealing.

Unfortunately, it was also a lie. When tested earlier in the week, this process turned out to completely fail (well, almost fail--it did result in some tasty hardboiled eggs). The eggs were indistinguishable from any other normal egg. Perhaps this should be testament to Tufte's comment that powerpoint is not a trustworthy way to convey information. Perhaps one should not assume that a chemical reaction will cause coloring to occur and should mix a coloring agent in directly. Or perhaps Giovanni took his egg secrets with him to the grave. In any case, this would not help us with our secrets.

Fortunately, piratey came to the rescue.

Piratey: Knowing that Alice was prone to eating things and drinking things and having strange and unexpected results i thought we could play with that idea. i had acquired some of these and we put one in each of many plastic easter eggs along with some sour candies, alice in wonderland stickers, some sf0 buttons, and the following instructions:

Eat Me!
(Eat me first. Chew me for at least 1 minute before swallowing,
moving all over mouth.)
Then try various foods/drinks.
Have a friend/stranger try the same foods. Compare notes. Enjoy!
- the white rabbit (aka the easter bunny)

Once one of these was discovered a veritable easter egg hunt ensued. yay secret eggs of strange and secret things!
