Day 1: Leave work early. My job does not require that employees work specific times, however, I usually spend all of Monday and Wednesday there completing my tasks. I left a few hours early, which I don't do often, as a gift to myself.
Day 2: Take time to go to a reception that I was invited to. During the week it is hard for me to make time to do almost anything. I was invited to a banquet before a lecture and was able to go relax with some of my friends for a half hour before going back to work.
Day 3: Take time to visit a friend. My schedule really does not allow for a social life most days. I have to sacrifice critical time in order to spend time with friends, but that's worth it to me. Unfortunately, I can't do this often, but in the spirit of giving to myself I made time.
Day 4:Slept in for 30 minutes. Though 30 minutes does not affect my day much, in the moment it feels so good to press snooze and sleep a little longer.
Day 5:Ate a bagel for breakfast. I try to avoid a breakfast that is purely carbs and aim to at least eat some protein, however, this bagel made my 10AM meeting much more pleasant.
Day 6:Make an effort to introduce two friends. Nothing makes me happier than seeing other people happy, and I was able to bring a female friend to a party to meet a male friend. The two really hit it off, like I had expected. I consider this a present because I usually don't make an effort to invite my friends to parties that are being hosted by my boyfriend's friends, and in doing so I definitely had a more enjoyable night.
Day 7: Shopping for some new shoes and a few dresses. Might I add- this shopping trip was overly successful.
How this changed my life: Frankly, my life did not change much. I feel as though I give myself these small gifts quite often because in my mind I work hard enough to indulge in my small amounts of free time. I work, take 6 classes at university level, hold a very demanding leadership position, am managing a student government campaign that is full swing at the moment, and so on. However, if I did not reward myself with these small pleasures, I would not make it through each day. Perhaps I should be a little less giving to myself, but if I don't do it, who will?
