Work is So Strange by Corrigan NnN

August 4th, 2006 4:46 PM

INSTRUCTIONS: Describe in some detail the strangest thing that happened to you at work in the past week. If you don't work, describe the strangest thing that happened to you during a leisure activity.

My work has been pretty consist recently, but about a month ago there was a weird event that stands out.

I take customer support calls for a software company. I wear a headset that picks up not only my voice but every other noise in a 20' radius (i.e. sneezing, laughing, people falling off of their filing cabinets, people laughing at other people falling off of their filing cabinets). Although such interference is generally ignored or laughed off by the startled client, I was once speaking with a rather surely gentleman from Texas when a page came out over speaker phones. "Fred, you have Dick Cheney on your park. Fred, Dick Cheney on your park."
I pause, surprised.
Client: "Is that some kind of a joke?"
Me, honestly: "I don't know."
This is strange because I don't know if (A) "Fred" would be all-up-ons a Dick Cheney joke, or (B) who calling "Fred" would be characterized as Dick Cheney. Maybe Fred wasn't even in the office. I asked around but nobody had a good explanation. Maybe it really was the VPOTUS.

I like the pause between hearing that and the man asking if it were a joke...you probably could have cut the tension with a knife in that moment. I don't know how you didn't burst out laughing.
