Contents of a Character's Wallet by Rabbit

June 12th, 2006 10:42 PM

INSTRUCTIONS: In Jack Finney's short story, "Contents of a Dead Man's Pocket", the character - clinging to the side of a building - imagines what the world will think of him if they only have the contents of his pockets to consider.

Empty your pockets, your wallet, your purse out onto a table- tally the contents and tell us what the world would think of you, if they had only those effects to consider. Then, decide upon one thing to add to the contents of your pockets, your wallet, or your purse, which will better enunciate the truth of your person to the world.

Every day I leave the house I do the "Three Amigos" check. Keys, Phone, Wallet.. tonight I spilled them out to examine the contents. I'm not sure what the contents of my wallet say, they all seem so ordinary. One thing I did notice is that I have a habit of holding onto things that I don't really need. Out of all the things in my wallet the only things I use on a regular basis are cash, debit card, license, and key card to get into work. Other than that most stuff is there "just in case." One thing that did surprise me was the amount of stuff I had left in my wallet from the 6 month engagement ring hunt that ended up with a custom ring being started, but was aborted about 2 months ago. Guess that stuff can get taken out! One thing that the contents of my wallet will show is that I travel. Stuff in there from Chicago, New York, Columbus OH, and North Carolina. I was just sitting here thinking why I keep the cards of my friends in my wallet. In a weird sort of way it's kind of like carrying my friends with me. They have a spot in my wallet, the one thing I have on my person every day. So to boil it down, my wallet (and my life) consists of wandering, friends, and love (even though lost). At least that's what I see when I look at that, I'd love to see other people's impressions, especially those of strangers.

As far as my pockets, I keep them pretty empty. Keys in the left pocket, sidekick in the right, cigarettes in a hoodie pocket or with the keys. Wallet in back pocket.

What to add? Not wanting to add more junk as this prompted me to clean some out, I printed the following quote and taped it to the inside of my wallet:
“I feel that this has given me the most incredible and wonderful thing
that I have ever been given and also the worst. Its a mixed bag. I
have been taken to the depths of extreme terror by this, I’ve had my
whole soul undermined by it on the one hand, on the other hand in one
sense my experience has been about finding joy.”
